Today is Yom Hashoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day. Established in 1953 by the Israeli Prime Minister David Ben Gurion and the President Isaac (Yitzchak) Ben Zvi, Yom Hashoah is an Israeli Festival to honor and remember the victims of the Holocaust…6 millions Jews, thousands of Russian gypsies, Jehovah’s Witnesses, homosexuals, physically and mentally disabled persons, twins, and others.
Years ago, I had the the honor of meeting a Holocaust survivor, and the stories she shared with me were both touching and horrifying. The following weekend, I took my children to visit the nearest Holocaust Museum. My oldest was studying WWII in school at the time, and she learned more in that tour than she would ever learn in a classroom. If you’ve never been to one of these museums, I highly recommend it.
Please take a moment today to remember. Ask someone you know to remember. After all, this important day probably won’t get as much coverage in the news, or by President Obama, as National High Five Day.
