Last month, West Virginia joined only two other states, Kansas and Oklahoma, in passing an anti-dismemberment abortion bill. The bill–Unborn Child Protection from Dismemberment Abortion Act (SB 10)–states that abortion providers cannot tear a baby to pieces in order to perform an abortion. The state legislature overrode Governor Tomblin’s veto on the bill with huge bipartisan support. Tomblin’s reason for the veto was:
“I am advised this bill is overbroad and unduly burdens a woman’s fundamental right to privacy,” Tomblin wrote.
Karen Cross, legislative coordinator for West Virginians for Life (WVFL) stated that the group was not surprised by the veto because this was Governor Tomblin’s third veto of pro-life legislation in three years.
The law goes into effect the end of May. Yet another case that pro-rip-the-baby-limb-from-limb advocates will no doubt take to the Supreme Court.
In the meantime, keep up the good work West Virginia!
