By all accounts, Disney has been a powerful presence in American culture for generations. Movies, theme parks, TV shows and later their own media outlets made them an empire that few entertainment companies could hope to match.
So it would barely have been noticed when they fired an actress because she wasn’t toeing the party line. After all, people lose their jobs all the time and this was no different. But Disney, in the way of all large companies, had grown complacent. They thought that the matter was settled with their official statement but they forgot that the internet is a great way to level the playing field.
What is happening right now with Gina Carano is the perfect series of events. First off, she didn’t back down or grovel. You would think she’d be a media darling for being a “strong independent wamenz” but no such luck. But rather than slink away, she continued to speak her mind without worrying about the consequences.
Second, you have Elon Musk buying Twitter. Although I am skeptical about how truly dedicated he is to the idea of free speech, I will admit that Twitter is a much more entertaining sewer than it used to be. Had the previous executives still been in control, she would have been removed from the platform.
Finally, you have a friend of Elon who is attempting to take over the board of Disney. This gave him enough reason to offer to cover the legal fees of people who have been discriminated for their views. Gina took him up on the offer and she now has a team of well-paid lawyers on her side.
Now I can understand the cynicism some people may feel. After all, Disney has a lot of money to make this go away and a PR rep that can say all the right things. But right now, there is a possibility that Gina and her legal team are going to respond with “see you in court and you better have the requested documents ready for us.”
The wall that Disney maintained for many years is beginning to crumble. And it’s long overdue.
