As of mid-year, 2024, the FDA has removed over 100 food and beverage products from the market deemed to be in violation of agency regulations. Recalls are issued for a variety of reasons. Officials may find that an item has been contaminated with potentially threatening bacteria such as salmonella. Other warnings are issued after a major food allergen is determined to have gone undeclared on the product label. According to a Newsweek article, “While all recalls mean that the food product in question could pose harm or injury to the consumer, only a handful of items on the FDA warning list result in an adverse reaction.” According to data reviewed by Newsweek, eight food and beverage products among the 108 recalled by the FDA from January 1-May 31 caused harm or disease to at least one consumer. Mind you, not all recalls result in adverse effects or illness in consumers, but the purpose of a recall is to proactively remove potentially harmful products from the market to prevent such incidents. I see a pattern here of “maybe, perhaps, it could, who knows.”
Now, the USDA Dept of Ag Food Safety and Inspection Services (FSIS) also puts out recall notices mostly for
Meat and poultry. According to another site I found, in June 2024, there were three recalls and three public health alerts issued by FSIS; May 2024 only had one recall and one health alert. Of the three recalls, one was due to “being imported without benefit of import reinspection,” and the two others were due to “misbranding and undeclared allergens.”
Ok. I’m no conspiracy theorist and know enough to be cautious while perusing these health food recalls, but it seems to me that in the last few years, the notices are more prominent. Is our government doing the right thing? Is some of it retaliatory against a brand, a State, or nation? I do know that our national food supply is filled with crap, so much so that other nations ban it. Go figure.
Just a thought that came to mind. Discuss at your leisure, or not.
